Glen Hansard funeral held in Dublin as thousands pay tribute

A funeral service for Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, 56, was held at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin following his fatal motorcycle crash last week. Thousands of fans had earlier filed through a public wake at the Baroque Chapel in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, where mourners brushed the strings of Hansard's battered guitar in a final tribute. Hansard rose to prominence in the 1991 film The Commitments and was long-time frontman of The Frames; he won the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song with Marketa Irglova for the film Once. The funeral service included musical performances by friends and family and followed days of public remembrance, including a book of condolence in Temple Bar and long queues to pay respects. Prominent musicians including Ed Sheeran, Bono and Bruce Springsteen publicly paid tribute, with Springsteen saying he was "heartbroken." Hansard was noted for a more than three-decade career, his annual Dublin Christmas Eve busk started in 2010, and recent charity work raising money for the homeless.

Glen Hansard died in a motorcycle crash and there has been an outpouring of love for him in Ireland, where, as he once noted himself, people prefer their heroes dead and gone rather than living and possibly answering back. I for one would like to hear him answer these words from Neko Case.
