Red Sox complete trade for Adley Rutschman after medicals cleared

The Boston Red Sox acquired three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles, receiving Rutschman, catcher Jake Rogers and cash while sending catcher Carlos Narváez, top pitching prospects Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, High-A center fielder Enddy Azocar and a player to be named later or cash to Baltimore. Rutschman, 28, is hitting .251 with a .764 OPS and eight home runs this season, his best power output since 2023, and ranks in the top five among catchers in fWAR despite missing time with assorted injuries. Boston’s catching group had a combined .219 average, a .615 OPS and only four home runs, the fewest in the majors, making Rutschman an immediate offensive upgrade behind the plate. The deal sends Eyanson, listed as the No. 47 prospect in baseball by The Athletic’s Keith Law, to Baltimore after he posted a 1.69 ERA in 11 games following a promotion to Double A. Rutschman is a switch hitter who has ranked since his 2022 debut among qualified catchers in wRC+ and OPS, and he is approaching his final round of arbitration eligibility with free agency following the 2027 season. The trade comes as Boston has surged to second in the American League wild-card race with a 31-8 run since mid-June, and it follows the club’s recent addition of Curtis Mead and the earlier dismissal of manager Alex Cora during the season.
