WestJet and the Canadian Union of Public Employees reached a tentative deal early Monday that ends a strike by 4,400 WestJet flight attendants which canceled hundreds of summer flights. CUPE had sought pay for members from the time they check in until they clock out rather than mostly only for time when the aircraft is in motion. WestJet did not disclose details of the tentative agreement; the pact will be presented to cabin crew for a ratification vote. CUPE said the deal, if ratified, would improve the legacy flight credit system by introducing a duty period premium that recognizes more of the work cabin crew perform and would increase compensation. Labour Minister Patty Hajdu confirmed the tentative pact on X, and McGill aviation lecturer John Gradek said restoring operations will likely take a few days after about 225,000 Canadians were affected by cancellations. Travel agent Shalene Dudley urged affected travellers to keep checking flight status as companies work to recover service.
