The Football Association of Wales has become the first nation to publicly withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid to be re-elected FIFA president for the 2027-2031 term. The FAW said it “hereby confirms its withdrawal of support for the candidature of Mr Gianni Infantino” after his scrapped plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investment firms. The FAW cited “failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement,” adding “Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.” UEFA and Concacaf issued statements criticising FIFA leadership and UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, while seeking to have relevant documents retained for potential legal action. Wales’s move increases pressure on Infantino’s presidency and raises questions about formal challenges to his re-election and possible accountability steps by regional confederations.
