Svengoolie airs The Night Stalker (1972)

Svengoolie on MeTV is airing the 1972 made-for-TV movie The Night Stalker tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central. Darren McGavin stars as wisecracking reporter Carl Kolchak, who investigates a string of murders in Las Vegas and comes to suspect the culprit is a vampire. The TV movie was adapted from an unpublished Jeff Rice novel, produced by Dan Curtis with Richard Matheson assigned to write, and is credited with inspiring a wave of paranormal-investigator television. The Night Stalker features a roster of classic character actors including Simon Oakland, Claude Akins, Ralph Meeker, Charles McGraw, Kent Smith, Larry Linville, Barry Atwater, Stanley Adams, and Elisha Cook Jr. The original film later led to a sequel, The Night Strangler, which Rice novelized after the initial success. Tonight’s broadcast highlights the premiere Kolchak appearance that helped establish the modern supernatural-investigation TV template.

The Night Stalker just did "monsters in the modern world" so well! The scenes of a dozen cops trying and failing to stop and kill one rampaging vampire really did highlight how supernatural horrors can still be potent in a world of guns and technology.
