NY high school to pilot humanoid robot, teachers call it inappropriate

educationJul 25, 202619805

Salamanca High School in Salamanca, New York will pilot a humanoid robot named Sally and an AI teaching assistant supplied by Realbotix as part of a district program. The Cattaraugus county school district bought Sally for $57,590 and Realbotix said the robot will operate as a closed-loop system while being available virtually 24/7 and offering personalized learning. Teachers and the Salamanca Teachers' Association called the plan inappropriate and dehumanizing, with Lacey Pihlblad, the union president, urging the district to pause the robot and software rollout until more stakeholders can weigh in and expressing concerns about data security and recording capabilities. Melinda Pearson, president of New York State United Teachers, said educators across the state find the pilot "creepy" and inappropriate. Some local Native American residents criticized the pilot as culturally tone deaf; Salamanca High School is on the Allegany territory of the Seneca nation. Realbotix, formerly Tokens.com, acquired Simulacra and its related company for $16.7 million in April 2024; the company has denied that its ownership of a maker of realistic dolls is related to the school pilot. The district would be the first in the US to deploy a humanoid robot and AI teaching assistant, according to Realbotix's press release.

notice they're only doing this in schools with large minority populations.

Creepy and scary at the same time:

Putting a sex doll in classroom isn't going help teach teenage boys that women are people.

Peter Counter, Nightmare Host8

if someone seriously suggests replacing your child's teacher with a phone taped to recycled sex doll, you are allowed to punch them

One of the points I make in The Celluloid Specimen is that behaviorists were drawn to classroom tech for the same reasons they used lab animals: complete control over the environment and surveillance of the bodies in them. Schools were where you tested and refined ideas, tech, etc. And, well...

weird menace and excessive bloodletting4

this reality sucks so fucking hard

everything about this story is offensive lol, yeah we spent 60 grand for the sex bot turned into uuuuh a skeevy LLM prompt. kids who wants a sexy and unsettling google interface. its not sentient, doesn't understand context, can't properly diagnose and guide students, but its also creepy n costly.

How did this even get approved? So you spent nearly $60,000 in public funds...on an...AI robot...from a company that pivoted to robotics from crypto...and bought a sex doll company...

Mr. Okay Guy2

"Realbotix, formerly Tokens.com ... purchased Simulacra, a Las Vegas-based company known for realistic sex dolls ... marking a pivot for the company from crypto to humanoid robots." Big titty sex doll AI teacher robots from a former crypto company, that's the full distillation of the Trump era
