Four types of thinker identified

An investigation by economists at Claremont Graduate University and Wuhan University analyzed more than 23,000 real-time thought reports from 258 volunteers aged 19 to 71 who used an app that beeped eight times daily for two weeks and found evidence of four tentative thinker types: people who worry about the world, those focused on household chores and finances, those concentrated on mind and body, and a work-hard, play-hard group combining career and pleasure. Thoughts tracked daily rhythms, shifting toward work during daytime and entertainment in the evening, and roughly half of thoughts were intentional while the rest were intrusive or wandering. Sensory impressions and feelings such as tiredness accounted for nearly 20% of thoughts, work 17%, food 14%, hobbies about 10%, and a similar share concerned relationships; when thoughts concerned wants, nearly half involved food or drink, especially coffee, and 29% sought relaxation or sleep. The mind was almost never blank, with only a fraction of a percent reporting no thoughts and relatively few thoughts about sex, a pattern the authors attribute partly to reticence; about a quarter of beeps went unanswered. The researchers reported that what people were thinking predicted their self‑rated happiness more strongly than other measures, but they cautioned the sample is WEIRD and the categories are not definitive because people likely move between them; the study is currently a preprint and has not yet been peer reviewed.
