'Weird Al' Yankovic turned down seven-figure Riyadh offer
Guess who had the integrity not to accept $1 million to perform at the Riyadh Comedy Festival last year?
It's impressive how many ethical quandaries can be solved by asking yourself, "Would Weird Al be cool with this?"
Turned down Riyadh, BUT NOT THE OREGON STATE FAIR 🦫🦦🪵
god bless this weird man
The guy who asks for permission to parody songs, even when fair use said he didn’t need permission has always acted with integrity. It’s not surprising in the slightest.
You can always count on Al!
This dude shooting a middle finger to AI marketing teams and Saudi Arabia is why he deserves to live forever
Weird Al feels the same way most of us do...Taking red money from the Saudis is Icky but also disgusting.
Rejecting the Saudis, rejecting AI. King shit.
He’s the coolest guy in the world. I knew he’d get there.
@alyankovic.bsky.social Hey Al, thank you from the bottom of my soul for continually reliably being an awesome kind and moral person.. You said no to A.I. You said no to this. Keep saying no to the right things. Keep being awesome.
So Weird Al turned down an AI ad and also the Riyadh comedy festival and the lesson is Weird Al has more integrity than the vast majority of entertainers triblive.com/aande/music/...
And puts on one hell of a live show too! I just want to be like Weird Al when I grow up
So uh this blew up and I gotta plug my book coming out in November as a result. No Weird Al in it but uh, he’s there in spirit maybe? www.upress.state.ms.us/Books/P/Peac...
the personal beef is understandable
Al is the best possible conservative. Keeps to himself, has ethics, to the point most people don't know he is conservative
they're calling him a national treasure
It’s been known for decades given that he always asks for permission to parody other artists.
This should not surprise any Weird Al fan.
Sadly weird Al is problematic medias 😔 Did we forget that he: - left his date in the desert - stalked a woman so hard that he died - tore off his coworker’s arms and legs with a chainsaw, and then mocked him by calling him Torso boy - Bit a man’s jugular vein
I just listened to an interview with Weird Al and came away thinking he’s quite possibly the most well-adjusted, normal celebrity on earth. Dude just has it figured out.
weird Al is a real one
Wait, so you don’t have to say yes to anything that might make you slightly richer???
Weird Al has more integrity than the vast majority of lawmakers and public officials.
Dude needs to be in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame
Duh, It's Weird Al 🤍
he always did, it's why he sought permission from the writers of songs he wants to parody, because the guy genuinely adores other artists and has no interest in his platform ever being used for something nefarious
Just a good guy. And I agree about his band! They should get so much credit.
Weird Al and Dolly Parton are different aspects of the same ethos. Both are prolific, great, genre-defining musicians iconic for intentionally playful, exaggerated personas but universally loved for their authenticity (& kindness). All while working for decades AND maintaining a sense of privacy.
Dolly Parton is the only billionaire who has given away so much money she is no longer a billionaire
I once worked for an artist and took a phone call from an incredibly polite person for him. I wrote down the message. I asked who I should say was calling. He said, " Oh, it's Al." "Al?" I said. " Yes, Al. My last name is kind of funny, let me spell it for you. ", he replied. He spelled it.
Now I'm going to be daydreaming about a Duets album involving the two of them.
It's almost like being kind allows for self-deprecation and love.
I think Willie is in that small group as well. And I don’t even need to use his last name either do I?
And by all accounts decent people
being really into Weird Al turns out to be one of the best decisions I made as a kid
I do want to push back on the people saying “See, it doesn’t cost you anything to be a decent person.” It cost him a million dollars! And while that is probably not that much to Weird Al it’s a lot to most people. Doing the right thing does cost you sometimes. That’s just not a good enough excuse.
plot twist, Weird Al is super normal
I knew that dude was cool
Weird Al is truly a real one.
We post a lot about what we’d do if we were rich and how you’d see us at the very least enjoying ourselves and not being maniacs and I think shorthand for that is “we would be Weird Al, we would come out to play accordion at Offspring concerts and everyone would go hooray because they like us”
The world would be better if more wealthy people didn’t treat their net worth like a scoreboard. Al gets it.
just talked to a local music biz guy last week about how when Weird Al played Riot Fest he spent the whole day he played watching other bands, including bands on smaller stages where he was one of like 14 people watching.
It is possible to be rich, famous, and even a Christian without being awful. Who knew?
I would LEARN a weird instrument like the accordion or ocarina.
It helps his net worth is $20 million. It's a LOT, but not stupid levels of wealth.
Eh, I'd probably skip all the fat suits
Weird Al seems like a real mensch indeed but it sucks so bad we all are surprised by a single rich guy going "hm I have enough money. I'm not gonna do anything shitty to get a little more."
He's always been someone who seemed to have decent opinions, at the height of the industry freakout over Napster, his objection with filesharing was with shock jock shit credited to him, not that oh no, a kid downloaded It's All About The Pentiums in 96kbps.
you have to watch The weird Al story with that Harry Potter dude it's very sweet! he comes from such a good background in Southern California 🤘
