Leeds United in talks to sign James Trafford

sportsJul 23, 202636313

Leeds United are in talks with Manchester City to sign England goalkeeper James Trafford. Trafford, who was part of England's World Cup squad but did not play, featured 17 times for City last season including four Premier League appearances and won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Newcastle United and Aston Villa had shown interest earlier this summer, but Villa now expect Emi Martinez to remain and Newcastle have cooled their pursuit. Leeds need a new goalkeeper after Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier left this summer; Lucas Perri and Alex Cairns remain at the club, with Perri having lost his place to Darlow and not featuring in the Premier League after the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle on 7 January. Trafford began his career at Manchester City, had loan spells at Accrington and Bolton, moved to Burnley in 2023 where he made 73 appearances, and returned to City last summer when they activated a buy-back for £27m plus add-ons. City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain in September, a move that limited Trafford's playing time and helped trigger transfer interest this window.
