Iran drone strikes on CIA facilities prompt probe of possible Russian role

newsJul 22, 202629626

Iranian drone attacks on CIA facilities in the Gulf have prompted U.S. intelligence analysts to investigate whether Russia provided targeting information or advanced drone technology, Reuters reported. Sources told Reuters the strikes were unusually precise and effective, prompting the inquiry; an internal memo described to Reuters argued Moscow likely played a role. The sources declined to disclose exact locations; one source put the number of facilities hit as "more than one and fewer than a dozen," and a second source said several were struck. U.S. analysts have not reached a conclusion, and the probe is focused on whether Russia supplied targeting data, technical assistance or weapons that improved Iran's strike capabilities. Reporting for Reuters was by Gram Slattery, Jonathan Landay and Timour Azhari.
