Xbox brings original Xbox backward compatibility to PC

gamingJul 22, 2026503,748

Xbox launched XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC in an early release today, making four original Xbox games playable on PC and supported handhelds including the ROG XBOX Ally and XBOX Ally X. The initial four titles listed in Xbox posts are BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy; each is available to buy on PC and is included with all XBOX Game Pass plans. If you already own a digital license for these games on console, that license now carries over to PC and handheld via XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming. Microsoft added PC-specific enhancements while preserving original gameplay, such as up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync, fullscreen and windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing, and customizable language and audio settings. The first four games will receive Achievements in the coming months, and Xbox says it will add more original Xbox titles to PC over time as part of a preservation effort. Players with compatible PCs or handhelds can access the backward compatible titles through the XBOX on PC app starting today in supported regions.

BIG Xbox news, Microsoft are still ghouls that you shouldn't give money to, and you can buy / softmod an old Xbox for pretty cheap anyway. It's still one of the cheapest retro consoles to collect games for too, if that's your jam.

If you get a 4K external blu ray drive with omnidrive you can already have access to your entire disc library

I see what you're trying to do Microsoft but it won't work. I hope yall don't fall for this attempt to wash over their genocide complicity and their corporate layoff destruction. Microsoft is an evil company who we do not need to hand it to.

But we already have that. It's called an emulator.

I wish I could be happier about this. I would normally love this kind of thing. But to announce massive layoffs just a few weeks ago and then try to use nostalgia as a way to bring some good will back their way is just a shitty thing to do.

You can already do this with basically every Xbox game for free and they can't randomly take the games away from you in 5 years

Depending on how this is implemented, I might be the perfect demographic for this. I have a huge game collection and Xbox is my biggest of the library. If we just get the ACTUAL Xbox exclusives (Otogi, GunValkyrie, etc) this could be huge for game preservation. I'm being hopeful. 🙏🙏🙏

This is not "backwards compatibility" unless you can stick the Xbox disc in your PC and play it. This is a port. Four 25 year old Xbox games have been ported to PC. Woopty doo.

A lot of folks like to think of the original Xbox as like the successor to the Dreamcast, but you know, they put Virtua Fighter 4 on the PS2. And Super Monkey Ball on the GameCube, which is the most Dreamcast-ass Dreamcast game on the GameCube.
