Austria has opened a police station in the house at Salzburger Vorstadt 15 in Braunau am Inn where Adolf Hitler was born in April 1889, converting the 17th-century former inn after years of debate. The government seized the building under a 2016 law, paying former owner Gerlinde Pommer €812,000 after long negotiations and a failed court challenge, and launched an EU-wide architecture competition in 2019 before spending millions on refurbishment and altering the facade. The site previously housed a local charity, Lebenshilfe, which left in 2011 when renovations were blocked and has not returned; local historian Florian Kotanko said the charity did not want to be used as a political fig leaf. Interior minister Wolfgang Sobotka had once proposed tearing the house down, a plan that drew criticism for appearing to deny Austria's Nazi past. The renovated building has no sign explaining its history, features security cameras to deter potential neo-Nazi pilgrims, and the only explicit link to the past is a 1989 street stone from the Mauthausen camp reading "Never again Fascism; In memory of millions of dead."
