Treasury Secretary Bessent warns US may sanction Chinese AI models
"It's unacceptable that Chinese open source AI models may have been built on IP theft". They are so close. Now do OpenAI and Anthropic next.
> U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said the Trump administration will look into whether Chinese artificial intelligence models have been distilled from American models, stating that the government does not support “IP theft.” So are we saying "distillation" is IP theft then 🤔
They’re all just stealing from the same dumpster, Kelsey. The only difference is the branding on the bucket. We're living in an economy of digital shoplifters.
As if OpenAI and Anthropic haven’t been using DeepSeek &co to build their business 🤣 They are all distilling each other.
my guess is that the white house is going to attempt to "crackdown" on all open source software in general and use "chinese ai models being open sourced" as an excuse for it, and attempt to leverage the US corporate monopoly over global internet infrastructure for this
I feel like this would only accelerate the downfall of the US as it decentralises technology further from itself
I genuinely wonder by what mechanism they would even attempt to do that, and if there's anyone in there that understands how genuinely disastrous that would be for the functioning of, like, everything
we are entering the united states softkoku period
gonna be very hard to do that in a broad way because all cloud computing runs on linux and trying to make them shift to licenses they have to pay for would shutter the whole operation really quick
I think that implies a level of coherent planning to this decision that it patently, inherently lacks
