Darren Jones sacked from Burnham’s cabinet
Interesting cabinet choices by Andy Burnham, new UK PM Rachel Reeves, David Lammy, Liz Kendall, Peter Kyle, Hilary Benn, Jo Stevens, Darren Jones, Steve Reed are gone. John Healy who resigned as Defence Secretary over defence budget is the new Chancellor. Will he find money for defence spending?
he’ll murder a bunch of disabled ppl for it.
He can cut money from PIP or whatever…
Ironique, Burnham adore les blagues 😏
Darren Jones feels like real loss, ditto Peter Kyle and Hilary Benn -but Bravo to Rachel Reeves choosing the back bench over a position she didn’t aspire to, I wish all of them a super summer - and Sir Keir Starmer was classy throughout - wish him the very best
No doubt the money to help people will be redirected to kill people.
Nothing screams "change" as much as keeping most of the same people in the same roles... 🤷
Darren Jones sacked. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Chief Secretary to the PM.
Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood have just gone into Downing Street.
Wow, he seemed a very capable minister
Darren Jones was one of the best communicators in government. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.
A Starmer loyalist, chums with Mandelson and wedded to the Blue Labour package of socially conservative policies. No surprise that Burnham has given him the boot.
I hope that doesn't turn out to be a mis-step – Jones has always struck me as one of the more capable and effective members of the government. I'm sure he'll be back in due course!
Great news, patronising git. The man who told Wales that we should jyst be grateful for whatever money Westminster gives us and compared Welfare payments to kids pocket money ... and some say he was a great communicator 🤷♂️
And Darren Jones has gone too. None of these are really surprisingly. Looks like appointments will be starting soon.
Jones did surprise me a bit. Not looking very conciliatory.
Jones was that rare thing in government: council house upbringing, comprehensive-school, non-Oxbridge degrees, representing the area in which he grew up. West Country and a very good commmunicator, too. His departure is very disappointing.
Getting rid of Darren Jones is a mistake I think. He'd have been a great asset to Burnham.
I think even I’ve been fired by Andy. And I’m not even in government! Or an M.P.
Fuck this shit! Darren Jones is actively sacked from government by Burnham. Jo Stevens is sacked too, as Welsh Secretary.
Darren Jones!!!! Well that just proves he’s not interested in governing well, just wanted the job. Darren was the best communicator,on top of his game always and now Pandy sees him as a liability. Fck me I’m gonna be right again about this twat.
I suspect that those sacked are those Burnham knew would turn him down anyway. Jones is now set up - he proved himself the best of communicators - he has time to grow further - and will be an excellent contender for the next leadership challenge.
One of the best communicators gone, well done! 👏
He’s burning bridges. It seems more important to distance himself from Starmer than find those most qualified for each position. I don’t like this. It’s made me agree with Andrew Neil.
He’s a rival -isn’t he ?
Now Hilary Benn has said he's going to the backbenches. More talent gone.
another Starmer ally departure but someone who was really across the EU nerdery of the reset - and had a good relationship with his EU counterpart. Driving early summit would have suggested keeping NTS in place. I hope that Burnham keeps managing EU relations in the Cabinet Office
Me for @ukandeu.bsky.social in 2024 on why this was right move ukandeu.ac.uk/starmer-is-r... Be interesting to see how much of a priority economic reset is for Burnham.. its coming with a hefty price tag (cf Erasmus)
Indeed. EU officials trusted him, though diplomats did express frustration with momentum of talks - but that may well be something that was above NTS's pay grade and EU's priority, which may not have been practical, to get a youth mobility scheme with home fees.
I was surprised by this on a knowledge management front. bsky.app/profile/levi...
Rachel Reeves, David Lammy, Peter Kyle, Steve Reed, Darren Jones, Jo Stevens and Probably others all sacked from Cabinet by Burnham. Quite a few of them do not deserve to be treated like this & it’s clear he’s trying to erase anything that remains of Starmer. Saddened that this is happening.
I agree, it’s odd watching it happening when Burnham wasn’t even voted in with a mandate by the public. I’m sure Burnham is a lovely guy, but it just doesn’t sit right with me. Starmer got the mandate with a huge majority and should’ve been allowed to see it through, it’s like the Tories in red.
Yes, our new PM is rearranging his cabinet. Please don't take it so personally. No one has done anything wrong.
