U.S. sought phone records of New York Times journalists and relatives
BREAKING NYT: The Trump admin sought the phone records of several Times journalists and their relatives — including one reporter's mother — in its effort to unmask the confidential sources who had provided information for articles about the security capabilities of Trump's new Air Force One jet.

This would be a multi-week scandal for any other president.
Freedom on the press for thee?
"I never thought the leopards would eat my face!"
In others news....The White House Correspondents Association looks forward to welcoming Trump to their dinner this weekend. pathetic.
"Whoever thought the leopards would eat MY face?!"
Trump’s $400 million luxury jet turned Air Force One is the largest foreign bribe to an American president in history. It’s also a massive national security threat, as we’ve warned for months.
Damn, seems like the Times should have cared about encroaching fascism back when it was only a problem for people of color and trannies
Wonder how the NYT sucking up to Trump is going....oh.
Is it? Is it breaking the new york times?
WHY WHY WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU ALL PARTICIPATING IN THE RESCHEDULED WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS DINNER?
As a long-time reporter, let me say this: I only do secret communications from my mom's phone. If you've ever thought we were on signal, we were actually on a bedazzled flip phone.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
We are going to need to build a new prison just for the overflow of everyone who committed crimes for this administration. 😒 “Just following orders” will not absolve them.
In a letter to Judge Subramanian revealing DOJ not only subpoenaed 3 journalists (& tried to subpoena 2 others) but also is trying to get phone records, NYT accuses Jay Clayton of lying in confirmation hearing abt following DOJ protocol on subpoenaing journalists. static01.nyt.com/newsgraphics...
Lying in confirmation hearings for Cabinet posts or for Supreme Court appointments has become so routine now that it is pointless to ask for undertakings on their future behavior.
Chuck Grassley is going to be FURIOUS
Yes. Hold them accountable for their lies.
The turnaround time, from last week’s hearings to NYT’s credible allegation, keeps the lie fresh in mind. Making it even a bit more difficult helps to break the GOP lockstep.
no true freedom without a free press 🇺🇸
Hmmmm There it is again. That lying, under oath, during his confirmation. Why's perjury just fine dandy now? Why isn't this impeachable @mikethompson.house.gov bc all of our rage abt perjury, whether scotus or cabinet is valid. Impeachable valid. @democrats-judiciary.house.gov @dscc.bsky.social
Lying under oath at a confirmation hearing is a crime
Obtaining phone records of reporters is supposed to be a last resort for DOJ. Obtaining records of their relatives is unheard of. I discussed the legal and policy protocols today with Katy Tur on MSNOW. www.ms.now/katy-tur/wat...
It’s not unheard if at all in authoritarian states, which the US is now. Tye US federal government is now one of the most corrupt in the world
It has reached the point where journalists and their families need to use burner phones and offshore based, encrypted email accounts.
...while concurrently, members of the Trump family are said to be using the Secret Service to keep from being served legal notices including subpoenas.
These people are exceptionally corrupt, and will corrupt everything they can get their hooks in.
Katy Tur, whose husband is the Bari Weiss puppet-douche on CBS Evening News.
More evidence of the Trump cabal’s panic and desperation … they will do literally anything now to stop the tsunami headed their way.
This is not about national security. This is about not liking factual news coverage. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/b...
Nixon used the same national security excuse to attack the press.
Yes. Republicans attack journalists, and the rest of the US, and the world, for their security, not ours. "Our Republican Party is the most dangerous organization in history." #Chomsky www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
So not only was the Trump administration trying to get the phone records of the NY Times reporters who reported on Trump's Qatari jet -- but also tried to obtain records from those reporters' relatives, including one journalist's mother. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/b...
Good thing they rescheduled the White House correspondents dinner with Trump as the guest of honor
... "And their relatives." Chilling.
In other news, the nazi regime would not just punish one individual for perceived crimes, they would punish that person's entire family. For more information, ask Claus von Stauffenberg's pregnant wife, children, uncle and cousins.
🤬🤬 The regime are TERRORISTS!
Who’s the deep state now?!
[the following post contains hyperbole, a literary device deployed for dramatic emphasis] I would *love* to watch a gubmint agent to try this with my mother, who may still be on a watchlist somewhere for the things she wrote to Cheney after one of his anti-teachers' union tirades
There is almost always an Alberta equivalent to political stories about the Trump administration. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Picturing Bret Stephens asking a coworker what their mother’s name is again
The NYT squeals only when it gets squeezed.
Not only is the Trump administration issuing subpoenas to reporters for doing their jobs, now it's trying to get the phone records of their spouses and even one reporter's mother. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/b...
Perhaps you can bring this up at the White House Correspondents dinner, where Trump is the honored guest.
Its a little late to panic - better to have panicked in October 2016😠
That’s weird because if reporters at the NYT did their jobs, Trump would be in jail.
LOL. I know, I'm a grumpy old man, but I know how I'd respond if the government tried to subpeona my phone, or my wife's phone, or any of my family's phones... I can't repeat it here cuz y'all aren't old enough...
Things Trump threatens: *Free speech & press *Free & fair elections *Rule of law *Checks & balances *Fair wages & taxes *Soc. Security *Healthcare *Environment *Education *The rights of women, workers, voters, consumers, minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ *World peace Resist! indivisible.org 5calls.org
Mob style threats are coming.
The Trump regime's Justice Department issued subpoenas to phone service providers, targeting not only New York Times journalists but also their spouses and, in one case, a reporter’s mother to identify confidential sources for articles about the security of Trump’s Qatari-grift jet.
This is an autocratic regime engaged in fascist tactics. It’s a 5-alarm fire &the “Fire Dept” is standing down. R-Congress must be voted out & prosecuted along w/ this WH & the entire administration, if we ever regain democracy. D-Congress find a way! Waiting for midterms is a risk we can’t afford.
🙄 It’s JD Vance you assholes.
The NYT waffles as usual. It’s not an “unorthodox attempt”; it’s an unconstitutional attempt.
NEW White House officials were left fuming after the New York Times reported that Trump had ditched his Qatari-gifted Air Force One in Europe because it was missing certain security and communications capabilities. Now they’re trying to acquire records the journalists’ phone records.
Minor typo and your DMs are not open. Hire me as your editor and fire that person.
my guess is all the excessive luxury finish and furnishings inside that Qatari jet makes it too heavy to properly equip with the security gear that Air Force One typically carries. Would be a great followup story that would make Trump's head explode 😈
Their basic position seems to be "We're allowed to screw up and you're not allowed to know about it". At some point we'll get an Executive Order making journalism illegal.
Completely outrageous. DOJ is deranged. Luckily: "All the subpoenas have been paused until Judge Subramanian rules on The Times’s motion to quash. A hearing is scheduled on the matter for Thursday in Manhattan." www.nytimes.com/2026/07/20/b...
There will not be a peep about this at the White House correspondents dinner where Trump will appear as an honored guest!
RELATIVES? Are you kidding? "Hi Uncle Mike? Listen, I got this subpoena from the Department of Justice and I'm totally confused! What the hell do they want from ME? What are you guys DOING over there at the Times?"
I want to know whose fucking mother, a mental health professional, they subpoenaed, and why she was a target.
How is this being covered in the (chortle) Free Press
Republicans swear they're principled champions of FREE SPEECH when it comes to peoples' "right" to harass and abuse trans people, then they turn around and crack down on journalists doing journalism. bsky.app/profile/froo...
