Bird of the Day is a daily photo prompt with today’s theme #SummerLovin, asking contributors to share bird captures taken during summer. The gallery leans into sunlit, seasonal moments and shore and garden scenes, from fledglings and migratory visitors to hunting herons and backyard songbirds. Short is an understatement. But that country is beautiful in both season. If you want to visit, I suggest going in the summer & mid-winter. Totally different experiences.

A recently fledged Stonechat perches on a lichen-speckled branch against a cloudless blue sky. The young bird has soft, fluffy brown plumage with subtle streaking across its head and chest, warm buff underparts, and rusty-orange highlights on its wings and tail. Its large, dark eye and slightly tousled feathers give it an alert yet youthful appearance as it looks upward, taking in its surroundings. Bright sunlight illuminates the fine feather detail while the smooth blue background isolates the fledgling, creating a simple, striking portrait of a young bird beginning to explore the world.

In this horizontal color photograph, the viewer looks downstream and across St. Vrain Creek, where tall, lush grasses and riparian vegetation line the opposite bank. A large fallen tree branch enters from the left side of the frame and extends out over the creek. Perched on the branch, a great blue heron crouches intently as it peers into the water below, searching for its next meal. Smaller branches from the same tree, adorned with green leaves, fill the upper left corner of the frame and partially veil the heron, creating a natural sense of depth and concealment. The gently flowing creek occupies the lower portion of the image and continues along the right side of the frame.

A beautiful moment that captures a great blue heron patiently hunting in the rich riparian habitat that is essential to its survival.
