EU fines AliExpress €550M under Digital Services Act

The European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for breaching the Digital Services Act, finding the platform failed to diligently assess and mitigate risks from the sale of illegal, unsafe, or counterfeit products. Commission officials said AliExpress did not staff teams dedicated to removing counterfeit and dangerous items and made it easy for bad actors to evade detection. The penalty is the largest fine imposed so far under the DSA and follows an investigation that began under the law. The Commission said AliExpress must take corrective action to address these systemic safety and compliance failures. Several outlets noted the ruling sharpens EU enforcement focus on large online marketplaces and could increase scrutiny of other global platforms.
