Noir Alley screens Dark Passage on TCM tonight
Tonight on #NoirAlley @tcmtv.bsky.social “Dark Passage” from 1947 with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall as she hides him after a prison escape. Shot from his perspective, he gets plastic surgery for life on the run. Agnes Moorehead is Bacall’s annoying meddling pal. Warner Bros. #FilmNoir #TCMParty
The years immediately post war must have been pretty wild for audiences to respond to this story of a woman's psychotic mania for revenge. Just as dark as can be, lol. Agnes Moorehead is completely unhinged in this film - probably why she still scares me whenever I see her on screen, lol.
I hate that throughout most of my life, whenever I saw Agnes Moorehead I immediately thought of Bewitched instead of Dark Passage. Same goes for Barbara Stanwyck, The Big Valley and Double Indemnity.
Great movie. Recently watched The Magnificent Ambersons. Agnes Morehead is fantastic.
This is a cheesy noir classic I love to re-watch. Bogie and Bacall, that fabulous apartment, and Moorhead practically stealing the show.
"Dark Passage" immediately made me think of "Satan's Alley" in the opening sequence of Trip Thunder. Sorry. I'll get me coat.
Adapted from the novel by David Goodis who also wrote Shoot The Piano Player. Another must-read, IMO. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_G...
Getting ready for #NoirAlley tonight... #FilmNoir DARK PASSAGE (1947) #TCMParty *Humphrey Bogart reading Dark Passage by David Goodis
I watched this movie for the first time this week. The screenplay is top-notch and is especially skilled about the omnipresence of coincidences.
David Goodis was more than just “good”.
It is a great book! Irene coincidentally painting landscapes up in Marin County near San Quentin when Parry escapes is more fully explained. Plausible in the film, but briefly addressed. Also, Parry's stream-of-consciousness interludes are hinted at in the film, but go full-tilt in the book.
One of the coolest movies ever.
I wish I could read a book with that much style.
