US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Chinese human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping in Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania while he was delivering parcels for Amazon. Wu fled China at the end of 2019, entered the US on a tourist visa and filed an asylum claim in 2020 that remains pending. A friend, Shi Minglei, said Wu presented proof of his pending asylum application when ICE asked for citizenship documentation but agents detained him and moved him to a Pennsylvania detention facility. Wu’s immigration hearing is scheduled for 27 July, according to the New York Times, and human rights advocates warn he faces risk of persecution if returned to China. Wu began as a commercial lawyer and later handled sensitive cases for religious minorities and political dissidents; he attended a December 2019 meeting in Xiamen after which several attendees were arrested. The Guardian reports the Department of Homeland Security and the detention facility did not respond to requests for comment, and observers linked Wu’s arrest to broader concerns about Chinese journalists and dissidents, including an extradition request for journalist Bai Zhaodong in Thailand.
