NYT: AI-written unauthorized biographies flood Amazon

booksJul 16, 202625198

The New York Times reporter Kashmir Hill found an AI-generated, unauthorized biography of herself titled "The Biography of Kashmir Hill" on Amazon and traced thousands of similar titles by pseudonymous authors across the site. Many of the books are inaccurate or fabricated, often flattering or error-filled, and one prolific publisher using names like John Crane Miller aimed to publish up to 10 books per week. Posts accompanying the investigation note at least one seller who has listed roughly 450 books and who said he will remove a title only if a one-star review proves a problem. Critics quoted in and responding to the piece say the churn of cheaply produced AI biographies exploits attention, misrepresents real people, and undermines trust in published information. The NYT story highlights how readily available tools and platform listing practices let pseudonymous operators flood retail catalogs with low-quality, unauthorised life stories that target journalists and public figures.
