London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is one of 26 people named to receive peerages and take seats in the House of Lords in a list published by Downing Street. He is among 16 Labour nominations including broadcaster June Sarpong and former union chief Christina McAnea; the list also includes five Liberal Democrats, three Conservatives and two crossbenchers, the former cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald and retired senior judge Sir Brian Leveson. The BBC understands Sir Sadiq could sit as a government minister but is not seeking a role in Andy Burnham's incoming government; he is mid-way through his third term as mayor and has not decided whether to run in 2028. The nominations were worked on before Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation and are described as political peerages rather than the usual resignation honours. A government source praised Khan for cutting violent crime, cleaning up London’s air, delivering the Elizabeth Line and restarting council house building, while a mayoral spokesperson said he was "honoured" and would keep standing up for the city. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the list showed "the uniparty writ large."
