Argentina rally to beat England 2-1, reach World Cup final vs Spain
The beautiful game. The people’s game. Throughout this World Cup, we have been reminded of a simple truth: football belongs to everyone. So does the joy and community it creates. Yesterday, I joined New Yorkers on Rikers Island to watch England take on Argentina.
We experienced one of the tournament’s biggest moments side by side. Joy and connection should not be scarce resources. Every New Yorker deserves to have their dignity affirmed.
As someone who has taught behind prison walls for more than 15 years, I love that you went to Rikers, Mr. Mayor, to watch the game with folx incarcerated there. To be seen to be human is so valuable, and also, so painfully rare in carceral spaces.
This is living out Matthew 25:36, "When I was in prison you visited me." And yet conservative "Christians" can't stop their critiques of the guy.
Can you be everybody’s mayor? All of us?
I’m a huge supporter & a prison abolitionist but I think you should put all Argentina supporters in an old ferry boat and sink it.
Just, wow. Thank you for being there for all New Yorkers.
You all, I just teared up at this. In a time of rising fascism, here's a leader who calls even those in prison & forgotten his people, people he serves. More of this please.
Most of these guys make phone calls home. They have visitors.
Good god it’s refreshing to see some actual moral leadership
"I was in prison, & you visited me": The Muslim mayor of NY continues to show more Christian values than all of the Repubs who love to shout about their supposed faith combined.
I can’t think, off the top of my head, of a single elected official who spent time with detainees, voluntarily, calling them part of the community, and spending time with them, shaking their hands, and spend time watching a football game. I may be wrong and do correct me if this happened before.
Can we just let him rule everything for a bit? I’d venture a guess he could make the world sing in harmony.
Oh, but does he do this for the AFL Grand Final? No? Curious…
It’s nice to see a politician that sees prisoners as people and not dollar signs for the private prison industry.
This is amazing. This is beautiful. Believe in people. I
Uma coisa dessas me trás lágrimas aos olhos, é o básico de tratar as pessoas como pessoas.
I'm happy. Not because England lost but because their media would be intolerable in the event of a World Cup victory. Jingoism cranked up to new heights, Oasis music on every highlight reel, TV presenters being smug, hastily compiled TV specials about how football came home. We've been spared.
Not just their media. Their fans would also be insufferable for at least a decade.
A glance thru the “today’s papers” section of the BBC website would show you the horrors that would await even if they got to the final …
That’s the thing. I don’t have any dislike towards English people but I detest the English media.
I don't really actively follow the World Cup so most of my experience with it is "this is the thing where every four years England gets hyped about winning and then loses"
It's okay I understand this intrinsically as a Mariners fan
their big rallying song is about how being an England fan is an exercise in pain and futility, and includes the lyrics "30 years of hurt" bc the last time they had won when it was written was 30y ago, and its been another 30y since the song was written.
The English relationship to football is like if baseball became the most popular sport in the world but the US somehow got brutally lapped in talent by every country with a military dictatorship in 20th century
🚨 Harry Kane tells @theathleticfc.bsky.social too early to know if this was last World Cup with England but says Messi playing at 39 shows why he will “never put a limit on”. 32yo captain adds representing #England “my pride & joy; what love to do more than anything” www.nytimes.com/athletic/liv...
I hope it is. He's never had the legs and always fades horribly as knockouts progress. An amazing player for England but the inability of managers to take him off when his legs go is inexplicable and costs us again and again. Tonight, at 1-0 up, he was a total waste of space.
If only he'd shown an ability to run and press in that 2nd half, even close to the amount of passion he says he has. He looked like a player with zero energy left. Kane was useless tonight, utterly useless. But we have no other world-class strikers, so he'll play in the '28 Euros.
Harry Kane (who again was anonymous in a big game) staying on will damage England for the next 4 years and potentially longer as he pulls the ladder up behind him for future players.. and Messi he most definitely is not
Maybe don't play golf next time with the guy who jinxes everything he touches
Sat out the last two games
We need to find an alternative, we didn't have a striker on the pitch for the second half
