Arkansas private school made pupils attack classmate, scrub floors
NEW: Despite multiple complaints — and videos — of physical abuse and mistreatment of students, Arkansas' Delta Institute continues to receive public funds. It is just one of hundreds of private schools taking state money with little oversight. w/ @arktimes.bsky.social
As dumb as abusing children, for no reason sounds, I found the root of the problem. It’s aArkansas bsky.app/profile/mayh...
When Huckabees run a state, this is what you get.
The method of circling one child & having others verbally attack sounds like “The Game” from the Synanon cult that is frequently used in Troubled Teen programs. Just horrible.
I am disgusted that my tax dollars are supporting any schools but public schools. My tax dollars should not support abuse or religious brainwashing.
Who would have predicted student abuse in an education system that provides money to "schools" without any accountability?
It's a problem that I have witnessed first hand! In Arizona these private (charter) schools that get State funds have VERY little oversight! The State pays 'lip service' to complaints and review. Not only are the children at risk, but the State approves any curriculum!
"Arkansas largely has chosen not to regulate private or microschools or monitor what's happening inside them. ... [T]he state only requires that private schools conduct regular fire drills, keep immunization records and have an American flag and a flagpole."
Obedience to authority is taught by using physical, mental or emotional coercion and domination. At home. At school. In the church. At your place of employment. In relationships. In social circles. Authoritarianism doesn’t happen overnight. A society must be conditioned to be obedient.
the thing about a lot of places like this is the actual "disability" most parents are seeking to correct is their children being insufficently compliant towards them, and if that's because of ADHD or whatever then the better their cover is for sending them to these hellholes
reminder conservatives are lowlife subhuman trash not even satan would want them in hell
That's why private schools should not be supported with taxpayers money. Public schools are held to the strictest and highest standards. Private schools evade accountability.
This is why we subscribe to @propublica.org and @arktimes.bsky.social !!! You should too.
Astonishing to me that with all the scrutiny of public education, Republican leaders in many states have turned over millions (tens, hundreds of millions) in public funding for private schools with no one watching out on behalf of parents, students or taxpayers (Also happening in NC) #ncpol
State subsidized child abuse so nothing new really.
We're so far removed from 'the best way to pay for pothole repair.' IDC if I'm biased, the 'new right' being batshit crazy is just fact.
“You lie. You lie all the time,” the school owner said to the student. She then directed classmates to attack him. She gave one a high-five. This private school, funded with tax dollars, is among an explosion of private schools in the past 3 years. www.propublica.org/article/arks...
I don’t need to read past the headlines to know this is a school run by evangelicals, I’m that confident that I recognize the pedagogical approach. This isn’t an aberration- this is mainstream educational philosophy in evangelical Christian schooling.
I don't understand how many psychos get into education. I wouldn't let that woman run an animal shelter.
They want unaccountable private schools where they can discriminate against minorities and teach some prosperity gospel to the whites.
The group violence sounds cultish. The filming of the violence sounds dumbfuckish😂
She spent the house arrest on a large horse farm, while in jail was directing people how to run things, and still owns the company that runs the school (which is still open).
It’s like something out of the Victorian-era England. Small minded people get a little power and it goes to their head.
started reading. the article is harrowing. a child abusing sadist funded by tax dollars
Staff-run "fight clubs" to discipline youth are a recurring issue in youth prisons, which are full of teenagers with disabilities (this school focused on youth with autism and ADHD). Including in blue states. Not an excuse, just: please also interpret this reporting as evidence of broader issues
we had public schools, then they decided to replace them with fake schools run by freaks. tell me again how democracy and limitless personal wealth are compatible.
With a huge surge of public money, new private schools are opening fast - without meaningful oversight. Even this Arkansas school - where the founder hit a kid, urged other kids to do the same, and stayed involved in the school's administration from JAIL - is still supported by taxpayer dollars.
Private schools in “Arkansas” says it all — but the truth is there is a lack of private school oversight in just about every state. Time for reform and prosecute!!!

Arkansas educator here - The LEARNS Act is a disaster at all levels, not just the voucher stuff. That's just the most obvious and immediately destructive part. It also has an absolutely corrosive effect on teachers and the teaching profession.
“Most people don’t think you’re a nice kid," the owner of an Arkansas private school told a boy before urging other students to take turns attacking him. She repeatedly thwacked him with a footlong plastic cylinder, calling him a liar.
Sometimes, I hate that my brain first went: "Why is cleaning put on the same level as physical abuse?"
This unacceptable abuse must be stopped immediately. The owner of the school must be prosecuted and her school must be closed.
Arkansas literally doesn't care what happens to its children it would seem they definitely need a Blue Wave
They used wooden paddles for corporal punishment when I went to middle school in Arkansas, prominently hung outside the classroom doors. Then again, it wasn't a fancy private school.
Future bitter and twisted mass murderer seeking revenge.
This is the republican model of education: private schools that take your tax dollars but have unqualified, dangerous amateurs in charge
Private schools and homeschooling should be straight up illegal there I said it.
(Private schools are innately evil)
This is a horrifying story from Arkansas. And, yet, we can assume similar abuse is taking place in Missouri because, well, Missouri is competitive in all the races to the bottom.
Also if the state funds it, it ain't a private school.
This is horrifying to read. And Arkansas is still sending them voucher money.
Jesus Christ, what the fuck?!?
Let this sink in: At an Arkansas school, a boy was hit by the school’s founder and attacked by classmates in a group session the founder led, prompting her arrest. Despite a jail term for the school’s founder, Arkansas still sends it public funds. @jsmithrichards.bsky.social @jodiscohen.bsky.social
And here’s why this matters: Arkansas is so hands-off that the state only requires that private schools conduct regular fire drills, keep immunization records and have an American flag and a flagpole. It doesn’t review schools’ curriculum or the backgrounds of operators. Anyone is free to open one.
Folks relocating businesses, families, etc for economic dev benefits, nice jobs, comfortable retirement, or just “low taxes”, routinely ignore the huge impact state government has across all domains of their lives. Healthcare from cradle to grave, legal rights and remedies, education…
Let this sink in: People in California and NY and MA and NJ and HI and OR and IL and WA and CT and MD and MN and RI are subsidizing Arkansas in doing this. And have been for generations.
