A federal court transfer of $5,625,005.48 was made to E. Jean Carroll’s lawyers after Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered payment following the Supreme Court’s rejection of President Donald Trump’s request to hear the case. A unanimous nine-person jury three years ago found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll; that jury awarded her $5 million in damages, and the transferred amount includes interest. Carroll’s attorneys said she will place the award in an interest-bearing account pending resolution of Trump’s petition for rehearing, and they will not take legal fees from the award. Trump’s lawyers pressed a last-minute bid to block the transfer and on Friday asked a federal appeals court to stay the payment or return funds to the court-controlled account while the Supreme Court considers rehearing; the appeals court previously denied an emergency stay. Carroll, who is 82, has said she will use the money to fund her retirement. Separately, jurors in a related trial found Trump liable for defamatory 2019 statements and awarded Carroll $83 million; Trump plans to file a petition with the Supreme Court raising presidential immunity arguments later this month.

"President Trump has paid the writer E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million that was owed to her as a result of a jury’s finding that he was liable for sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s and then defaming her." www.nytimes.com/2026/07/14/n...
