Writer E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.6 million that a jury awarded her after finding President Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan said a unanimous nine-person jury found Trump liable three years ago; the U.S. District Court in lower Manhattan posted that the total amount was disbursed to Kaplan’s law firm on July 9. Carroll accused Trump of assaulting her in a luxury department store dressing room in 1996; Trump has denied meeting Carroll and said she fabricated the story. Trump sought to pause the payment by petitioning the Supreme Court earlier this month, but the court unanimously denied that request and Carroll’s lawyers then asked a federal court to release the funds. The payment resolves the damages award from Carroll’s first successful lawsuit against Trump that went to verdict in 2023.
