UK children could become one of unhealthiest generations in decades, report says

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health published a State of Child Health report finding UK child health has declined or stalled across 12 internationally recognised indicators including infant mortality, oral health, obesity, vaccination, mental health disorders and asthma. Only 84% of children receive two doses of MMR by age five, below the World Health Organization target of 95% and the lowest among G7 nations, and the UK has one of the highest asthma-related mortality rates in Europe. Infant mortality rates have shown little improvement since 2023, while obesity and infant mortality are more than twice as high in the most deprived areas compared with the least deprived. Dr Helen Stewart, the RCPCH officer for health improvement, called the record a "national embarrassment" and urged the incoming prime minister Andy Burnham, due to take office on 20 July, to prioritise child health. The RCPCH recommended sustained investment in children’s health services and workforce, better collection and sharing of child health data, and binding national targets to narrow inequalities. YouGov polling included in the report found only 12% of parents think child health has improved over the past decade. The college asked the new government to set out plans within its first 100 days to make children’s health a priority.
