The Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia's preliminary finding is that Sen. Lindsey Graham died of an aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, his office said. Graham, 71, died Saturday evening after a "brief and sudden illness," hours after returning from a trip to Ukraine and ahead of a scheduled appearance on Meet the Press. An emergency call responding to Graham's Capitol Hill residence referenced a dispatch for cardiac arrest, and CBS News published photos of emergency responders taking a person from the home Saturday night. President Trump called Graham "one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known," and leaders including Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Israel's President Isaac Herzog issued tributes. The report explains an aortic dissection is a life threatening tear of the aortic wall; the medical examiner's finding is described as preliminary. Graham was born July 9, 1955, in Central, South Carolina, and served multiple terms in the U.S. Senate where he was known as a foreign policy hawk and frequent advocate for Ukraine's defense.
