Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-PremierTech) won the hard Stage 9 in Ussel, taking victory from a late breakaway and beating the field in the sprint. The stage was shortened because of intense heat, but racing still averaged about 43 km/h. Tadej Pogačar kept the yellow jersey after the stage, with teams and riders noting there are still two weeks left in the race. Tom Pidcock suffered a mechanical on a descent but recovered to rejoin the front group. Merlier launched a powerful sprint that briefly overshot a Van der Poel leadout, and NOS TV quoted Van der Poel saying, "Fortunately I have some experience." Prestige lists coverage noted the win was Van der Poel's third Tour stage and moved him past Mark Cavendish and Learco Guerra in the rankings.
