Jake Tapper interviews Donald Trump about Lindsey Graham

journalismJul 12, 2026547,892

CNN anchor Jake Tapper took a live phone call from Donald Trump in which Trump said Sen. Lindsey Graham favored prolonging the Russia Ukraine war and praised Graham for defending Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation. During the call Trump told Tapper "We're trying to have CNN go on a normal path" and later said of the Strait of Hormuz closure "From our point of view, the strait is open. Don't talk about this matter." Several posts criticized Tapper's handling of the segment as deferential, noting Trump at times slurred or wandered in his answers. Other posts connected the exchange to a claim that David Ellison is poised to take control of CNN through the Paramount WBD merger and suggested Trump framed the takeover as a way to influence the network. The episode quickly focused attention on Tapper's line of questioning and on whether the network will face increased pressure to shift its coverage.

"When Donald Trump first appeared in U.S. politics, Graham recognized him immediately for what he was: the spokesman for an alien ideology, one radically different from the idealistic patriotism that Graham had practiced and preached since childhood." www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Graham’s life was not a tragedy. It was a choice. And for what? The approval of Donald Trump? The praise of a man whose measure he had taken a decade ago? open.substack.com/pub/charlies...
