Met probes £37,500 donation to Robert Jenrick's leadership bid

The Metropolitan Police have opened an investigation into a £37,500 donation connected to Robert Jenrick’s 2024 bid for the Conservative leadership, following a referral from the Electoral Commission on 6 January 2026. The sum is said to be part of a £100,000 donation from British entrepreneur Phillip Ullmann given via Spott Fitness, with allegations that £37,500 ultimately came from US businessman Gary Klopfenstein in breach of UK electoral rules. Jenrick, the Newark MP who has since joined Reform UK and serves as its Treasury spokesman, has called the allegations "entirely false" and said he has had no contact with the Met in relation to the matter. The Met did not identify which individuals are the subject of the inquiry. The Electoral Commission confirmed it referred evidence of potential offences outside its remit to the police and has paused its own investigation pending the Metropolitan Police inquiry. Ullmann and Klopfenstein are reported to be in a legal dispute over the matter. A Reform UK spokesman said Jenrick and his campaign complied with electoral law, that Ullmann was introduced to Jenrick by a Tory MP, and that the campaign cooperated with the Electoral Commission in 2025.
