David Reynolds2Both goals should have stood. But if they’d have disallowed the Argentina one for the contact on Salah, they’d have had to award Egypt a penalty for an offence that wouldn’t normally be enough to warrant one. VAR was brought in to remove controversy, but just creates more of it.

I would love to hear a FIFA official explain why Argentina got that VAR review on Egypt’s goal scoring play and not vice versa. Not even why they didn’t grant Salah the penalty; maybe they wouldn’t have. But why no review? Why yes for one team and not for another?

shlominus1yeah, no review there was not a good look. the egyptian goal that was nullified earlier was the right call, but egypt obviously deserved the same chance (espcially since the situations were so similar). the refs were pretty good overall during the game, but that last call might have been a mistake.
Darwin Woodka1Exacty. The refereeing is not consistent even WITHIN the games for the different teams, much less between games. Things called in one game are not called in another. Things called for MESSI are not called for other players.
I’m not having fun. It’s not “electric” to see a referee overturn a goal via a VAR review on a foul he’d not been giving all game. It’s not fun to see the same referee suddenly keen to give soft fouls in the closing stages to a team seeking to waste time & disrupt any momentum by winning free kicks
Mari Murphy24I’m fine with “bad” refereeing if it stays consistent, but that fella seemed to want to be the protagonist, and what he would and wouldn’t call shifted in different stages of the game. Hated watching it. Loved the football we saw, but hated the football he shaped.
