Daniel Alfredsson is joining the Toronto Maple Leafs as an associate coach, the team announced Tuesday, and will be an option to oversee the Leafs power play next season. Jim Hiller named John Gruden and Brad Werenka as assistant coaches alongside Alfredsson, and the club said Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde, both members of Craig Berube’s staff, will not return. Alfredsson, 53, spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame; Hiller said, “Daniel’s experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves.” Senators owner Michael Andlauer praised Alfredsson’s contributions to Ottawa while saying he wished Alfredsson were not joining an archrival. The hire reunites Alfredsson with Mats Sundin as a teammate in the Leafs organization after years of Battle of Ontario playoff rivalry and shared time on Sweden’s national team, including the 2006 Olympic gold medal squad. The move pairs Alfredsson’s track record against Toronto, 35 goals and 75 points in 84 regular season games and seven goals and 15 points in 24 playoff games, with a Leafs roster that includes Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and newcomers Darren Raddysh and Gavin McKenna as power-play options.
