Nigel Farage resigns as Clacton MP, vows to stand in by‑election

politicsJul 7, 202624716,473

Nigel Farage resigned as MP for Clacton and announced he will stand in the resulting by election, saying he wants to frame the contest as “the people versus the establishment.” The move follows reports he failed to declare a £5 million gift and comes while the parliamentary commissioner for standards, Daniel Greenberg, is investigating his conduct. Farage’s allies told reporters he is “sick to death of being judged by Sky, The Times and Daniel Greenberg.” Reform UK intends to move the writ while parliament is sitting, likely producing a by election next month as a new government led by Andy Burnham is taking office. Opponents face a choice whether to contest; the BBC notes precedents where parties have declined to stand to avoid legitimising what they call a publicity stunt. The standards investigation continues and could still trigger a separate recall petition and another by election if it leads to that outcome.

EXC - The £5m gift to Nigel Farage by a cryptocurrency billionaire was reported to the National Crime Agency by bankers who were concerned it may have been laundered money, the Guardian can reveal. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

It's going to be an interesting by-election campaign!

We need to remember what a ‘cryptocurrency tycoon’ is likely to be. How can you make money with crypto?

Jo Wolff21

It was so much simpler when you could just bribe voters with half a pound of free sausages.

Vicious sneering odium10

A short thread on SARs and Farage. In simple terms, banks are required to monitor transactions for money laundering purposes and report any suspicious activity (SAR) to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Suspicious does not = criminal, just issues of concern, for example being unable to /1

hoskas6

Remrmber when Farage picked a fight with Coutts. What was that about really?

Yvonne Lam6

I'm not in the UK. This is the Nigel Farage that resigned as an MP earlier today, correct?

Grumpy Philosopher5

I‘m not sure it‘s possible to be a crypto-billionaire without your money being the proceeds of crime, that’s most of the point of crypto. It would be more remarkable if money ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶n̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶b̶r̶i̶b̶e̶ donated by a crypto-billionaire were not laundered.

Farage probably hoped calling a byelection and thereby halting his investigation would allow time to change the narrative, but all that doesn’t apply when its the NCA, consequences Nige, and about bloody time. #5MillNige #Farage #NigelFarage #Reform #Clacton

Chris Hutchings #ChoirsForClimate4

Rachel Reeves apparently has the right to refuse to accept Farage's "resignation" by *not* appointing him to the Stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds. She should postpone that appointment until after all relevant investigations have been completed - both this one and the Standards Commissioner's.

Can’t help remembering the furore when Coutts wanted to decline Farage as a customer.

Robert Jenrick has a meltdown on #C4News He refuses to accept that there are parliamentary rules that Nigel Farage may have broken And insists the only people who can judge Nigel Farage are the people of Clacton 😅 - Whatever you do, please don't share this humiliating clip

Only someone with a heart of stone wouldn't laugh at the demise of Jenrick's political gambit... playing out here in real time

Pawel Swidlicki28

Reminded of that Stewart Lee quip about (Richard Hammond I think?) a cowardly man trapped between two types of cowardice. In this case, fear of appearing disloyal to another party leader, and fear of damaging his own prospects by getting having to defend something that clearly stinks from a mile off

Sweary Spider17

Please don’t share Farrukh’s clip of Jenrick shitting the bed, and then proceeding to shit the entire bedroom.

Patrick - Here for the craic❗️🤷🏼‍♂️😉9

Trouble is when you’re talking complete and utter bollox with not a ion of truth involved it’s so easy to just churn it out and make yourself look desperate.. Even when you’re a seasoned bullshitter like Jenrick

Tony Dexter8

Jenrick slides further than the greasy pole.

Simon Robert H K7

I knew he was a shit, but fuck me gently this is hilarious. Imagine if it was #ChrisMason. He’d be nodding along sagely

AJ 🦋7

Ha! This is some pathetic shit. Jenrick gave up every shred of credibility to defend Daddy.

Diane Messias6

If I'd been standing there with that microphone I'd have had to physically fight with myself not to bop the little twat on the head. Several times. #RobertJenrick

Anand6

this disgusting man was in government, exercising power over vulnerable people and now arguing for a mobocracy

Alistair King4

We’re going to see more of this nonsense - the argument, virtually explicit here, that democracy = voting and nothing more. Jenrick is a Cambridge-educated ex-lawyer. He’s not an idiot. He’s a sophisticated thinker. But he pretends not to be because he’s a devious, calculating, opportunistic cynic.

Nigel Farage £5 million 'gift' from a cryptocurrency billionaire was reported to the National Crime Agency by bankers who were concerned it was money laundering. The whistleblowers alerted the NCA as they were "not satisfied they could trace the ultimate origin of the funds."

The question for Nigel Farage now is whether it's less embarrassing to un-resign and claim that was an establishment stitchup, or to spend a month competing with a bin. Neither is exactly a *great* option. Neither solves his ongoing scandals. And it's a mess entirely of his own making.

Ed Davey is right here. Farage can’t be allowed to run in a by election. He can resign, but he should not be allowed to run, pending outcome of investigation into his corruption. #Farage #Clacton

A timely reminder Nigel Farage wants to - leave the ECHR - repeal the Equality Act - Strip back workers rights - Lift restrictions on exploitative zero-hours contracts - repeal the Renters’ Rights Act which abolishes “no fault evictions” PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR IT youtu.be/KxOQRt8PQys?...

"In what must rank as one of the most self-pitying, self-obsessed pieces of political rhetoric we’ve heard from a politician since Boris Johnson’s myriad attempts to justify himself back in 2022, Nigel Farage surprised absolutely no-one..." Me for @uk.theconversation.com this arvo.

Farage complains about the Government wasting money — then demands taxpayer cash for a needless by‑election to serve his own ego. It’s pure hypocrisy. I hope the people of Clacton see through Farage's disgraceful stunt and votes for an MP who truly represents them.
