Nigel Farage resigns as Clacton MP, vows to stand in by‑election

politicsJul 7, 2026902,784

Nigel Farage resigned as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election that he says he will contest. The move follows reports he failed to declare financial support from an ally and comes while the parliamentary standards commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, continues an investigation. Farage’s team told allies they plan to move the writ while parliament is sitting and before the summer recess, which would likely produce a by-election next month. Reform UK is framing the contest as "the people versus the establishment" and is explicitly challenging Labour to field a candidate; Labour faces pressure over whether to contest the seat. If Farage wins, the standards investigation would resume and could still lead to a recall petition and another by-election if constituents force one.

"In what must rank as one of the most self-pitying, self-obsessed pieces of political rhetoric we’ve heard from a politician since Boris Johnson’s myriad attempts to justify himself back in 2022, Nigel Farage surprised absolutely no-one..." Me for @uk.theconversation.com this arvo.

Farage complains about the Government wasting money — then demands taxpayer cash for a needless by‑election to serve his own ego. It’s pure hypocrisy. I hope the people of Clacton see through Farage's disgraceful stunt and votes for an MP who truly represents them.
