Nigel Farage resigns as Clacton MP, vows to stand in by‑election
A timely reminder Nigel Farage wants to - leave the ECHR - repeal the Equality Act - Strip back workers rights - Lift restrictions on exploitative zero-hours contracts - repeal the Renters’ Rights Act which abolishes “no fault evictions” PLEASE DON’T FALL FOR IT youtu.be/KxOQRt8PQys?...
Now that Fromage is toast, Labour can stop pandering to boneheads on all of those issues
Binface can put out a manifesto that directly highlights all of these things that “man of the people” Faridge doesn’t want the people to be aware of
Perhaps so could fund Led by Donkeys billboards all over Clacton
And of course the media have been quick to publish this. What? They haven't???
Ed Davey is right here. Farage can’t be allowed to run in a by election. He can resign, but he should not be allowed to run, pending outcome of investigation into his corruption. #Farage #Clacton
I agree. If Farage wants to stand as a candidate the investigation must conclude first.
Letting him fight a byelection, that he's forced the state to waste money on, getting angry against only Count Binface, stuck in Clacton again, while everyone else gets on with government & the investigation continues, & the press gets reason to investigate more every day, it's not a bad outcome.
Will he be elected unopposed ?
How about we replace the oxygen with nitrous oxide and make this a Binface v Farage head-to-head ... or head-to-bin.
My friend in frinton on sea said farage is pretty Darned useless
Absolutely correct, complete the investigation. When he is found guilty, disallow him from running for public office. Then run a by-election
"In what must rank as one of the most self-pitying, self-obsessed pieces of political rhetoric we’ve heard from a politician since Boris Johnson’s myriad attempts to justify himself back in 2022, Nigel Farage surprised absolutely no-one..." Me for @uk.theconversation.com this arvo.
I really try to see the best in people but I can find no reedeming features in Farage. Was the same with Johnson - both have gaping holes where humanity, dignity and morality should be.
Farage has a uniquely mobile face. We've all seen him do his classic "aggrieved barrow boy", "posh twat", and "stock-trading spiv", but the "earless basset hound" look in that thumbnail is definitely a new one to me. Such versatility!
The man's arrogance and self obsession are only exceeded by his bigotry, ignorance and stupidity. Stand a single Green, gay anti-fascist former refugee as a unity candidate and let's be rid of the loathsome toad in parliament. Well, it's a thought, eh?
Fair play to Nigel for setting a new benchmark in self-absorption. What's the quote that sealed the deal?
He is a pathetic grifter and hopefully this fucking charade with be the end of him and his wretched party
Did I miss something but Farage is the “establishment” - Public school (Dulwich College), Commodities trader, properties, crypto and gold. And a fing con artist ! Man of the people he is not!
Farage complains about the Government wasting money — then demands taxpayer cash for a needless by‑election to serve his own ego. It’s pure hypocrisy. I hope the people of Clacton see through Farage's disgraceful stunt and votes for an MP who truly represents them.
Is it reasonable to pass a law to the effect that you cannot stand in a by-election that you have triggered by resigning? Is there a downside to that?
Does this mean that Farage might actually visit Clacton? That would be a novelty.
#Farage and #ReformUK ARE THE ESTABLISHMENT....the worst, corrupt, 1% backed faction of it... #ComeOnClacton SHOW THIS TREACHEROUS TROLL WE WANT NOR NEED ANY OF HIS DIVISIVE HATEFUL HORSESHIT!! FOR REAL HOPE and REAL CHANGE ... #VoteGreen #NEVERNigel #NEVERReformUK
An utter charlatan, deeply unsuited to the role of MP.
Farage has set a new, shamefully-low bar for performative politics. If he wins the byelection, it won't change the investigations into the £5m and the funding from Cottrell. This is nothing more than an attention-grabbing stunt.
It's definitely an intelligence test for #Clacton
He needs permission from the chancellor to resign
Do we get 12 weeks paid leave while you go work for someone else? Or be paid by billionaires to incite racial hatred and discord in your own country ? By the way isn’t that treason against the state ?? Where is the investigation on Russian money and the push for Brexit done by Farage and Johnson??
Keir Starmer, "This is a desperate stunt from Nigel Farage" "He is up to his neck in sleaze" "Politics should be about improving the lives of millions of people, not about personal gain" "Not about hiding dodgy donations" "And the public will see this for exactly what it is"
Not sure they will Keir.
Unfortunately probably not the good people of Clacton who are drawn to celebrity no matter how sleazy. A good KC should be able to find a legal way to stop him wasting taxpayer’s money. Needs to take a long walk off Clacton pier. But that would necessitate actually going to Clacton
Farage’s speech has been fact checked by the Guardian. He is telling the truth he hasn’t been found to have broken the law - yet! 🤔 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Very much enjoying all the main parties saying "nah, we're not playing" and not running candidates in Clacton, which means Farage will be re-elected and the investigation will be on again.
spose that does mean it's not impossible that Binface might actually beat him
Actual LOLs at Radio 4 News right now
Me too, though maybe we're underestimating the latent Binface vote....
The investigation doesn't actually need to stop, or even be paused, they have the statues behind them to keep on investigating.
I think a lot of the 'maybe some totally repellent in Clacton unity candidate can win' stuff on here is ignoring the bigger point, which is, as Twll says here, Farage thinks that 'well, if the voters of Clacton don't care about my five million, why should you?' is a winning argument anywhere else.
yeah i forgot that it's entirely possible there's another one in like 2 months anyway lmao
It does seem the problem is that he can still likely win enough votes to stop the conservatives recovering
Remember, no MP can actually resign. It’s the law. A quaint mechanism is to apply for a nominal office of profit under the Crown. That triggers a disqualification. That office is granted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. She could say no.
Labour faces a conundrum over Clacton - Burnham is set on a summer where the prevailing story is the change he is bringing to the country - an August with full government grid and face time with the electorate. Many want to marginalise the Farage by-election as much as possible.
But it is hard for the party of government to decide not to run against Farage and leave him wide open to even increase his majority. Perhaps an independent might take on the challenge - but who? (One Labour person jokes that they should just let it be Count Binface vs Farage)
I’m a cynic, so my guess is that Farage is resigning to give himself a few weeks when he’s not an MP to refill his coffers without declaring the donors or amounts.
