French captain Kylian Mbappé condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla as "a despicable woman and unworthy" of her post after she published racist remarks on X and Instagram following Paraguay’s 1-0 World Cup loss to France. Mbappé, 27, wrote that Amarilla’s "recklessness and your brazen racism" had overshadowed Paraguay’s players and that he would never allow people like her to "spread their hatred and racism across the world." Amarilla is a 61-year-old senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party and did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Paraguayan government issued a statement saying it "deplores and rejects" her remarks and that they do not represent the government or Paraguayan people. The French Football Federation called Amarilla’s comments racist and "utterly despicable and unacceptable," and France’s sports minister Marina Ferrari said the remarks were "abhorrent, unworthy, and all the more unacceptable given that they come from a political figure." Mbappé scored the only goal of Saturday’s round of 16 game on a 70th-minute penalty and enters the quarterfinals tied with Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland with a tournament-high seven goals, with 19 World Cup goals overall, one behind Messi’s record. France plays Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals Thursday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
