French captain Kylian Mbappé publicly condemned Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla as “a despicable woman and unworthy” of office after she posted racist insults about him on Instagram and X following Paraguay’s 1-0 World Cup round-of-16 loss to France. Mbappé wrote that Amarilla’s “brazen racism” and recklessness overshadowed Paraguay’s historic effort, and he said he would never allow people like her to spread hatred. The 27-year-old scored the match’s only goal on a 70th-minute penalty and now shares a tournament-high seven goals, with 19 World Cup goals overall, one behind Lionel Messi’s record. Amarilla, a 61-year-old senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Paraguayan government issued a statement that it “deplores and rejects” her remarks and said they do not represent the country, while the French Football Federation called the comments racist, “utterly despicable and unacceptable,” and France’s sports minister Marina Ferrari said France would not remain silent. France is scheduled to play Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals on Thursday in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
