Jarell Quansah was sent off after a VAR review for a studs-up, high challenge that caught Mexico's Jesus Gallardo in England's World Cup Round of 16 win over Mexico. Referee Alireza Faghani initially allowed play to continue but overturned that decision after the pitchside review, showing a straight red. The Mexico bench reacted furiously and BBC commentator Alan Shearer said punches were thrown as both benches clashed. England were 2-1 up at the time; Harry Kane converted a penalty shortly after Quansah's dismissal to make it 3-1, Raul Jimenez later scored from the spot to set up a 3-2 finish. England held on to win and advanced to face Norway in the quarter-finals. Quansah had been deputising at right-back amid an injury problem that has affected England's options at that position.
