Super Typhoon Bavi, packing maximum sustained winds up to 280 km/h and gusts to 333 km/h, threatened Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as emergency evacuations began and residents boarded up homes. The U.S. National Weather Service warned of “very dangerous” conditions, forecasting catastrophic wind damage near the eye along with storm surge, hazardous surf, and heavy rainfall. Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts moved Bavi westward early Monday; authorities said if the center tracks near Rota many structures "will be uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer." AFP reported roughly 210,000 people live across Guam and the Northern Marianas and cited deserted roads and police advisories urging residents to remain indoors. Rota mayor Aubry Hocog urged preparedness and prayed for community safety. Meteorological agencies including the EU Copernicus Marine Service and the World Meteorological Organization linked the storm’s intensity to record-warm sea temperatures and developing El Niño conditions. Emergency services remained on standby as officials continued to monitor the typhoon’s path and prepare for large-scale damage and prolonged disruptions.
