Flames erupted on the Brooklyn Bridge shortly after 9:30 p.m. on July 4 as Macy’s fireworks were being launched from the span, with video showing smoke and burning sections on the Manhattan-bound side while fireworks burst around them. Witnesses Nearing Khoula and Mohamed Shaban said the blaze began small then produced heavy black smoke and caused extra fireworks to explode. A source familiar with the response said the minor blazes burned on platforms installed to launch the pyrotechnics, not on the bridge structure itself, and that the 143-year-old bridge remains safe and structurally sound. The FDNY extinguished the fires using two engines and a Post reporter observed the flames burn out after about a minute. Police said there appeared to be no injuries reported in connection with the fires.
