FIFA confirmed Folarin Balogun’s red card carries only the automatic one-game suspension, meaning the USMNT expects him to be available for a World Cup quarterfinal if the United States beats Belgium in the round of 16. Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute of the U.S.’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR-directed pitchside review concluded he stomped on defender Tarik Muharemovic; referee Raphael Claus initially did not show a red but upgraded the decision after the review. A U.S. Soccer spokesperson told The Athletic that FIFA’s disciplinary committee will not add games to the ban. Balogun, who celebrated his 25th birthday Friday, told reporters he thought a yellow would have been fair, called the contact unintentional, and said he was “extremely surprised” by the red. He returned to the field after the match to celebrate with teammates and to shake the hands of the referees, saying players should “show them the right way to handle things, even when you think it’s unjust.” World Cup red cards carry an automatic one-game ban but the committee can increase suspensions; by contrast, Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron kept a one-game ban while Qatar’s Assim Madibo received a five-match ban for a tackle that broke an opponent’s leg. If the U.S. advances from Monday’s match in Seattle, Balogun will be eligible for selection in the quarterfinals.
