Tommy Hunter, 'Canada's Country Gentleman,' dies at 89

Tommy Hunter, the Canadian country musician and longtime CBC television host known as "Canada's Country Gentleman," has died at age 89, his business manager Brian Edwards confirmed. Edwards said Hunter died of natural causes on Thursday, a report first published by The Canadian Press on July 3, 2026. Hunter hosted The Tommy Hunter Show from 1965 to 1992 and regularly introduced Canadian audiences to artists including Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, Anne Murray and a young Shania Twain, then billed as Eileen. He won three Juno Awards and one Gemini Award, was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, and was a member of the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada. Hunter is survived by three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
