House Democrats on the Natural Resources Committee published a 55-page report titled "From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People out of their 250th Birthday," alleging the White House-backed group Freedom 250 misled donors and repurposed America’s semiofficial 250th celebrations to serve President Trump. The report, led by Rep. Jared Huffman, is based on interviews with unnamed whistleblowers, sworn Congressional testimony, internal Freedom 250 documents and written responses. Democrats say Freedom 250 organized high-profile events including a UFC fight outside the White House in June, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, a July Fourth fireworks show that opened with a Trump rally, and a "Patriot Games" scheduled for August. The report notes Freedom 250 was created by executive order, was incorporated as an LLC in October 2025 under the National Park Foundation, and that the Park Foundation’s board now includes Trump loyalists such as Chris LaCivita. Democrats accuse Freedom 250 of funding programming through opaque avenues, including soliciting foreign funds, misleading donors, selling access to the president, awarding contracts to allies, and staging events with a sanitized, overtly Christian presentation of history. The report says those tactics potentially amount to criminal fraud and argues Trump "hijacked" a unifying national celebration rather than working through the bipartisan America250 commission created by Congress in 2016.
