U.S. officials believed Israel plotted to kill Iranian negotiators

The New York Times reported that U.S. officials believed Israel may have been plotting to assassinate Iran’s negotiators Abbas Araghchi and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf while Washington was holding delicate talks with Tehran this spring. American officials feared an Israeli assassination effort would doom the negotiations and therefore asked other countries in the region to warn Iran about the possible threat. U.S. concern followed an April episode in which Israeli fighter jets entered Iranian airspace as the negotiators were flying back from talks, forcing their plane to make an emergency landing and requiring them to complete the journey to Tehran by land. The reported warning to Tehran was intended to protect the two officials so indirect, technical talks in Doha, mediated by regional states, could continue. Those talks were working through implementation of an interim memorandum of understanding and had unresolved issues including control over the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. step to tip off regional partners instead of confronting Israel directly reflected American officials’ priority of preserving the fragile diplomatic process.
