Vatican declares Society of St. Pius X in schism, excommunicates bishops

The Vatican declared the Society of St. Pius X in schism after the SSPX consecrated four bishops without papal consent at its seminary in Econe, Switzerland, on July 1, 2026. The Vatican’s doctrine office excommunicated the four newly consecrated bishops and the two bishops who participated in the ceremony, calling the consecrations a "schismatic act" and saying the society had created an intentional rupture with the Catholic Church. The ritual-filled Mass lasted about five hours and was attended by some 15,500 people, according to the Vatican account. The decree labeled SSPX priests schismatic and excommunicated, and it invalidated confessions and marriages those priests administer. The Vatican warned that lay people who "adhere formally" to the SSPX are also considered schismatic and excommunicated. The office said it went beyond the minimal sanctions in canon law to issue the broader penalties after Pope Leo XIV had urged the SSPX to delay the consecrations for the sake of church unity.

Vatican response! the gist is “they excommunicated themselves by doing this” and they quote a lot of the nastiest little jabs interesting to see where they call them “the Lefebvrists” and not the Society of St. Pius X, positioning them as a cult of personality rather than a legit-sounding order

The Society of St Pius X is about as concerned with praying in Latin as Gamergate was about ethics in news journalism. 🙄 Oh my God when Vance comes out pro-schism someone has to check his Latin liturgical chops ON THE SPOT
