Reports: Trump plans to remove D.C. cherry trees for golf course work

The Washington Post reports President Donald Trump toured East Potomac Golf Links carrying renderings that show a far more extensive redevelopment of the municipal course than federal officials have publicly disclosed. Photographs of the plans show the redesigned course stretching across nearly the entire East Potomac peninsula and extending play to the shoreline while omitting several public amenities, including the riverside bicycle trail, the miniature golf course and Washington’s oldest grove of Japanese cherry trees. Hundreds of cherry trees along the peninsula perimeter do not appear in the drawing, and the plans would raze the White Course, an area planted with cherry trees in 1910, to incorporate it into a practice facility. The Washington Post coverage raises the prospect that longstanding parkland and historic trees could be removed, but reporting cited by Newsweek notes there is currently no confirmation the administration has decided to cut down the oldest trees. Photographs of the plans carried by Trump are the primary evidence for the larger footprint shown in the renderings.
