People smuggler convicted in France found seeking asylum in UK
#r4today reporting BBC’s investigation into people smuggler ‘King’. Justin Webb totally crestfallen when told by immigration specialist that Brexit binned the data sharing agreement we had with the EU. So, we can’t now properly check. We don’t have access to Eurodac - the fingerprint database. Ffs.
Their shock still shocks me. How, ten years on, are we still in the position where key people don’t seem to know what we threw away 🤦♀️
They were told at the time& were offered to still be a part of it, but BORIS JOHNSON and the Tory Brexiters extremists wanted out of anything to do with the EU. If Mamhood had any sense that’s what she should be exposing how Brexit harmed the UK, but because they voted for it, they are keeping stum.
How is it possible that a senior BBC journo didn’t already know this? I’m constantly astonished by some journalists’ poor grasp of basic information.
But, but, but......Brexit was supposed to help secure our 'boarders' (sic)!! Surely we can have been lied to?!?
I stopped listening to #r4today some years ago, because I got fed up of starting the day getting cross. But almost every day I’m reading of its failings, its bias, its complete lack of understanding of the issues it’s reporting on. Time was it was an essential source of news. Not any more.
Just goes to show that many journalists are not that well informed on many subjects. Though anyone covering ‘migration and Brexit’ could/should have know this very important fact… Obviously, that fact is also not known by vast nr of Leave Voters. For them it’s all “the EU punishing us”…
One of the racist and transphobic BBC’s nastiest “journalists” thought he had another anti-refugee gotcha. Instead he exposed his precious Brexit as the problem for his rightwing listeners.
On the upside: let’s please appreciate any instances in which Justin Webb is totally crestfallen #R4Today bsky.app/profile/13sa...
After Brexit the UK lost automatic access to several key EU-wide security databases. The House of Lords Justice & Home Affairs Committee has since conducted an inquiry into post-Brexit cooperation between the UK and the EU on law enforcement & criminal justice and found it to be ‘sub-optimal’.
Yep. You could almost hear him think “What? Really? Oh blast.”
Thanks to Brexit it’s now harder, if not impossible, for the UK to check the criminal and immigration records of asylum seekers. That’s not a side effect, or a sign of ‘a botched Brexit’. It’s a direct result of breaking away from the EU.
Brexit benefits! More criminals from Europe we can’t identify and send back! Feeeeeel the sovrinty!!!!
“Immigration officers have told the BBC that since the UK left the European Union, it has become more difficult to check criminal records from some other countries.” Brexit made it much harder to control our borders. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Meanwhile Farage will tell us leaving the ECHR is imperative. But that would destroy our relations with allies, put everyone’s rights at risk & change nothing for ppl coming here seeking asylum. www.libertyhumanrights.org.uk/issue/what-i...
that suits the brexiteers. they never wanted to "solve" immigration, they only ever wanted to exploit it. this is a win for them.
But this headline is meat and drink for Farage.
