Scientists create synthetic 'SpudCell' that feeds, grows and reproduces
Meet SpudCell, a synthetic cell made from lifeless ingredients that feeds, grows, divides, and experiences selection. If it doesn't have all the hallmarks of life, it has a lot! Here's my story. Gift link: nyti.ms/4vCbTih
The quest for a synthetic cell has a deep history, including high-profile failures. In my book "Life's Edge," I wrote about how John Butler Burke became famous early 1900s for making "radiobes"--mixing radium with beef broth to create life. Turned out he was very wrong!
OK this is insane. Its funny how we are able first to figure how to get them to "reproduce" or at least continue to increase in population, but figuring out how to manage the waste associated with that increase eludes the scientists. Im trying to figure out a human corollary for that:)
