Morocco beats Netherlands on penalties, advances to Round of 16
The fact that people are treating Morocco winning against the Netherlands as a huge sensation tells you so much about how we look at football. Morocco: semi-finalist at the last world cup, Africa cup winner, 6th in the Fifa world ranking. I wonder what makes people treat them differently.
Morocco was the AFCON runner up to be fair
Part of it may be the assumption that everything still is the same it was in one's youth. Many people also still assume Germany and Italy are among the best teams in the world 🤷♂️
Nobody with actual world football knowledge takes Morocco lightly. It's world cup time when lots of casual fans are more invested and they don't know much.
Whoever treats this as a sensation has not followed international football in the last four years.
It wasn’t that Morocco was surprisingly good as much as it was HOW BAD they made the Netherlands look. It might’ve been a shootout, but Morocco outplayed them in every facet of the game. If fact, the Netherlands was so scared they STARTED 4 center backs!
Tbh, it also suggests they didn’t even watch the group stage. Morocco outplayed Brazil a little more than 2 weeks ago FFS
Zlatan on the Netherlands and manager Ronald Koeman: "This loss is on Koeman because I didn't recognize this Dutch team. And he lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity. And that makes me angry. Lose with your identity, and try always with that. That's who you are." ⚽🔥📺🎙️ #WorldCup
He's right, switching to 5 defenders after going with 4 through a succesfull poule fase was the wrong decision. Virgil on record not liking this tactic, De Jong was overwhelmed in midfield the whole match. Completely outplayed the whole match.
A dumb comment. You play with the players you have. They lost in the fifth round of penalty kicks to a Morocco side of equal or superior quality. That’s life.
Just BS from Zlatan. Marocco was superior from any point of view to the Netherlands. They stay in the game thanks to the orange goalkeeper. Koeman could not do anything. The Netherlands could not attack they were overwhelmed by the Marocco players.
They looked like they were playing for penalties
A small bit of context that makes this even more cutting. Not only did Zlatan play for Ajax, which means he knows how Dutch football should be played, Koeman was his manager during his time there.
Should also blame the Dutch FA for even hiring him. He's been mid-tier at best for arguably his whole managing career.
