Full Strawberry Moon rises tonight, skywatchers share photos and ceremonies

The full Strawberry Moon peaked Monday evening at 7:56 p.m. ET, giving skywatchers across Europe and North America clear views and prompting photographers to capture rises behind landmarks such as Ely Cathedral, the Empire State Building in Manhattan, and skylines over Chicago and Palm Springs. Astronomers and articles stressed that the name refers to June strawberry harvest traditions from Native American tribes and that the Moon does not actually turn red. Many observers shared images and small community ceremonies as the first full moon after the June 21 summer solstice lit the night. Several photographers noted clear, calm conditions but heavy water vapor or smoke in some areas, which affected appearance and visibility. Some posts pointed to a rare 18.6-year lunar cycle this season that keeps the Moon on a lower, shallower path across the sky, a phenomenon observers said will not repeat for about 17 years.

#OriginalRollCall Tuesday 30th June Bonjour! Slept a few hours, awake on & off since 3.30. Thank you Strawberry Moon. Always wrecks my sleep pattern. Not much planned for today. Pottered in the garden yesterday & threw some seeds around, watering like crazy now after the searing heat of last week.
