Paraguay eliminated four-time champions Germany after a 1-1 draw ended in a penalty shootout, winning 4-3 to reach the World Cup Round of 16. The match, played in Foxborough, Massachusetts, delivered Germany’s first-ever World Cup shootout defeat; Germany had previously won every World Cup penalty shootout they had contested. Gustavo Gómez was pictured celebrating Paraguay’s victory after the final spot-kick. Germany striker Kai Havertz said “I’m speechless. My second World Cup, and we’ve messed up for the second time.” Paraguay’s president declared a national holiday the day after the upset, and Paraguay advance to the last 16.

This is the fifth Dutch Men's World Cup appearance of the 2000s. In two of the previous four, the Dutch went out in a game with a standalone Wikipedia page that starts with "Battle of..." Neither of them is the final where Nigel de Jong kicked a guy in the sternum
