Lionel Messi scores in seventh straight World Cup game
Cape Verde qualified for the World Cup for the first time, scored their first goal, got their first point in a heroic effort vs Spain, and are now the Cinderellas of the tournament having moved on to the knockouts with three draws. Their reward? Facing Lionel Messi and Argentina in the Round of 32.
I love this for them. They were going to get knocked out soon enough, but now they get to play against arguably the greatest futbol player of all time in the world’s most popular sporting event. It’s going to be a once in a lifetime experience and the world will be watching. Incredible story.
Taking the field with Argentina/Messi is its own reward!
At least they can say they played against Messi. And there’s no disgrace in losing that one.
Cabo Verde played impressively, without question. Unfortunately, the top seed always the bottom seed in single elimination tournaments.
I learned more about global geography during FIFA tournaments than I learned in school. Doesn't say much about my prior geography knowledge but it has improved.
And I am sure they would have it no other way. Embrace challenge.
Lionel Messi became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games while extending his all-time scoring record with his 19th goal in Argentina's group stage finale against Jordan.
I'm old enough to know that Messi is a once-in-five-generational player.
I know FIFA is thinking if they cram World Cup soccer down our throats for a month, we’ll be the next cash cow. Not gonna happen. Kids are all over soccer in their early years, but once they hit high school, it’s over. Basketball and football are all that matters. The US is not a soccer culture.
Messi genius #FIFAWorldCup #ARGvJOR 3-1 establishing new world records...the old fellas are doing well this comp, Ronaldo not too far behind, he is 41, Lionel 39...once upon a time footballers this age would have been long retired...
If we beat Egypt we will face Argentina and Messi again!
I have been interested today in the relative contributions to their matches by Messi and Ronaldo. I think the former is in the lead on that metric. Portugal appeared to lose goal opportunities while trying to catch up on Ronaldo’s speed, or lack of it.
They also smoked and drank a lot more back then 😉
