Chelsea in talks to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland

sportsJun 27, 202615167

Chelsea have opened talks to sign Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, with manager Xabi Alonso keen on bringing the experienced Swiss to Stamford Bridge. Sunderland insist Xhaka is not for sale and say they will not accept bids for the player. Xhaka only joined Sunderland last summer and the 33-year-old is reportedly receptive to a move, having expressed a desire to rejoin Alonso following their time together at Bayer Leverkusen. The situation leaves a clear standoff: Chelsea pursuing discussions while Sunderland publicly refuse to sell, making any transfer depend on whether Chelsea escalate their interest or Sunderland change their stance.

Sunderland do not want to sell Granit Xhaka, who has emerged as a target for Chelsea. The 33 year old is a hugely influential and valuable player at the Stadium of Light, one who proved to be worth much more than the £17m they paid for him last summer.

Would rather he signed for any other club that Chelsea. Even Spurs. Hope he stays at Sunderland. Proper club.

Chelsea are in talks to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland… Don’t do it Granit. You’re one of us and always will be. Don’t go. 💔

The fact Chelsea didn't even get a transfer ban after signing players illegally for a decade is utter nonsense. Now signing players from teams directly competing with them. Without Xhaka Sunderland are much worse. Status quo prevails once again.

🚨🔵 BREAKING: Granit Xhaka can be Chelsea surprise signing in midfield. 🇨🇭 The midfielder wants to re-join Xabi Alonso and has expressed desire to return to London… …accepting any contract condition just to join #CFC, reunite with Xabi and go back to London. Deal on.

Other clubs have to operate under a set of financial restrictions that Chelsea can just ignore knowing the EPL will let them off Its basically fixing the league

I’ll take one order of no thank you please.

And if I cry??? Then will you do it Granit?

Grey Eye Magpie12

Oh no I hope theyre gonna be ok #nufc ("Accepting any contract condition" is brutal)

🤢 Almost as unenjoyable as the transfer itself will be the landslide of “I booed him and I was right” post hoc revisionism 💁🏻‍♂️

stim possible3

what the fuck man you are at a better team than chelsea right now like we are in europe and they are not what the absolute fuck

Timi2

I said a while back he never forgave Arsenal fans. He found his way back to the Premier league and London but not at Arsenal.

FPL Chancer2

This would be a huge loss for Sunderland especially with the added workload of European football

Bill DiFilippo2

congratulations to every arsenal fan from like 2021 or so on xhaka going to a london rival

Matt2

This would be an excellent signing. Similar to when they brought in Thiago Silva for his leadership.

Not at all surprised in Chelsea going for Granit Xhaka. Xabi Alonso will want him for two reasons: 1. He’s an Alonso disciple. Will probably move into a coaching role under him when he retires. 2. Alonso wants ready-made players. Doesn’t tend to have time for long-term projects.

Seeing talk of Xhaka to Chelsea and while I fully expected it…I don’t like it one bit.

In fairness to Xabi Alonso, if he is looking for a cultural reset at Chelsea then a signing like Granit Xhaka makes a lot of sense. Also showed last season how he can still cut it in the Prem. Worth noting Sunderland's stance is their skipper is not for sale, though.

Can understand it from Xhaka POV. He's going to be 34 soon and comimg off the back of a World Cup does he really want a 50+ game season at Sunderland or 1 game a week at Chelsea? Sunderland fans will be dissapointed having had Europe to lose out to a side without Europe but they voted for that tbf

🚨 Chelsea are interested in signing Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka. Player keen on playing under Xabi Alonso again following their spell at Leverkusen together. Sunderland don’t want to sell, while Chelsea value Xhaka at far less than some of the numbers suggested given he is 34 this year.🇨🇭

Chelsea and Granit Xhaka. It's real. Sunderland don't want to sell but Granit Xhaka rather likes the idea of Chelsea. Call me cynical but there's an inevitability to these things. w/@sjohnsonsport.bsky.social @theathleticfc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/athletic/740...

someone here in manchester told me he was going to united a few days ago. guess the alonso link is huge. would be a shame to see him leave sunderland. the league loses something when the richest club take the best players from everyone else.

Chris Weatherspoon3

'More broadly, this move happening would see Sunderland firmly join the ranks of the Premier League’s middle, whereby the best players are soon snaffled by those with deeper pockets.' www.nytimes.com/athletic/740...

I don’t know how you go about replacing him if you’re Sunderland. He was such a massive part of their whole approach last season.

🚨Sunderland say they won't accept bids for Granit Xhaka. Unclear how far Chelsea would go for him but 33-year-old seems open to the possibility of a reunion with Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footba...

They’re in a bad way, financially. Free transfers are going to be a priority for this summer for them

Nolan1

Chelsea needed veteran experience. Good signing for them, but also they led the league in red cards last season and Xhaka won’t help with that 💀

FPLMbeumo ✨1

Reunited with Alonso, surprised me until I remembered they won the league at Leverkusen together

@emn0.bsky.social

Chelsea will offer stupid money for Granit Xhaka just because. However if they believe this Chelsea team will be the reincarnation of 23-24 Leverkusen they’re delusional.

On the flip side, it sounds like they might lose Xhaka to Chelsea.
